The Foodways Calendar is a produced every year by the Center for Food and Culture. The calendar includes photographs of food and foodways from around the world along with "food for thought" ideas to think about the many ways food connects us to places and people. It links to our website ( where more descriptions, photographs, and recipes are available.


Each month features a different theme of connection, suggesting a more “mindful” way of thinking about food.  For example, January is comfort foods, which differ across cultures and for each individual. February features honey and includes photos of the processes of extracting honey as well as a whimsical painting of a mechanical bee by local artist Will Santino, and honey bear jars sold by local Schooner Farms.


Photographs in the calendar were contributed by friends of the Center from around the world. Center education coordinator, Melissa Hill, and director, Lucy Long, selected the photographs and wrote the text, while local artist, Becky White-Schooner, donated her time and talent to designing and actually putting it together. Also, it is produced at a local business, BG Printing in Bowling Green.

The Center for Food and Culture is a non-profit established to promote a deeper understanding of the ways in which food connects us all. This understanding can then be used to create a more just world and to enhance the meaningfulness of our own lives. Our mottos are “Food Connects Us All” and “Nourishing Connections—To Food, Through Food.” The calendar helps to get the word out about our mission, and helps to support some of the many free workshops and educational materials that we offer.
